Third -Year Students of the Kaneshie One Junior High School were on Wednesday, 11 June educated on the activities of the United Nations and the dangers involved in the use of hard drugs. The students numbering 120 were taken through the structure of the UN and the functions of its principal organs, the methods used by the organization to resolve conflicts, the need to preserve the environment and why one should keep away from hard drugs.

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has paid a three-day (19-21 April 2008) visit to Accra, Ghana during which he formally opened the 12th Meeting of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD XII. The visit was his first to Ghana since he assumed the leadership of the organisation. Mr. Ban was accompained by his wife, Mrs. Yoo Ban Soon-taek. He intercepted his participation in UNCTAD XII with courtesy calls on Ghana's President, H. E. Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD, Mr. Akwasi Osei Agyei, the Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, the Rt.-Hon. Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes and held bilateral talks with a number of the Heads of State that attended the UNCTAD XII meeting. They included the President of Brazil, H. E. Mr. Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva, the President of Finland, H. E. Mrs.Tarja Halonen, the the Vice President of El Salvador, H. E. Madam Ana Vilma Escobar and the leader of the Zimbabwe Opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, Mr. Morgan Tsvangiria. In spite of his heavy schedule, Mr. Ban had almost an hour long interaction with UN staff at UNDP grounds.

Fifty years ago on this day, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah proclaimed “Ghana is free for forever. But the independence of Ghana would be meaningless if not linked up to the total liberation of Africa”.
